HIPAA certification
Is there an official HIPAA certification? What employers mean when they ask for one, what a certificate actually proves, and how to get one.
HIPAA certification at a glance
There is no official HIPAA certification. HHS and its Office for Civil Rights do not certify people, courses or organizations as "HIPAA certified". When an employer or job posting asks for HIPAA certification, it almost always means a certificate showing you completed HIPAA training from a private provider. Some professionals also hold privacy or compliance credentials from private bodies, but none of these is required by HIPAA.
| Government certification | None — HHS does not run an official HIPAA certification program |
|---|---|
| What employers usually mean | A certificate of completion from a HIPAA training course |
| Required by HIPAA? | Training is required; certification is not |
| Typical cost | About $15–50 for an online course with a certificate |
| Validity | Set by the provider; many employers expect a yearly refresher |
The short answer
HIPAA requires organizations to train their workforce and document it (HIPAA training requirements). It does not create any certification. There is no government exam, license or registry of “HIPAA certified” people.
What a “HIPAA certificate” actually is
A certificate from a training provider shows that you completed that provider’s course, usually with a passing quiz score, on a certain date. It is useful evidence for an employer’s training records. It does not mean a government body has assessed you, and it does not make any organization compliant.
Certificates vs. professional credentials
| Type | What it is | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Training certificate | Proof you completed a HIPAA course | Most healthcare staff and vendors |
| Professional privacy or compliance credential | Issued by a private professional body after an exam | Compliance officers and privacy professionals |
| “HIPAA certified” organization | Not an official status | See the organizations guide |
How to get a certificate
- Choose an online HIPAA course that covers both privacy and security topics — see HIPAA training for what to look for.
- Complete it and pass the quiz.
- Download the dated certificate and give a copy to your employer.
- Repeat when your employer refreshes training — usually yearly.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get HIPAA certified?
Complete a HIPAA training course from a private provider that issues a certificate of completion. That is what employers almost always mean. There is no government exam or license.
Is HIPAA certification required for a job?
HIPAA does not require any individual certification. Employers may require proof of training, because the law requires them to train their workforce and document it.
How long is a HIPAA certificate valid?
The law sets no expiry. Providers and employers usually treat certificates as valid for one year because organizations refresh training periodically.
Is there a HIPAA certification for organizations?
No. See HIPAA compliance certification for organizations — what third-party assessments exist and what they do and don't prove.
