What to check before you choose
- Your own policies, not only the rule
- HIPAA requires training on the organization's own policies and procedures (164.530(b)) and a security awareness program (164.308(a)(5)). A generic course covers the rule; you add your policies.
- Completion records
- Records of who completed which training and when help document the training HIPAA requires. Check that the course gives you them.
- New staff and changes
- Train new staff within a reasonable time after they start, and train affected staff after a material change in your policies (164.530(b)(2)).
- Roles
- Front desk, billing and clinicians meet different risks. Role-specific content or short additions help.
- "Certification"
- A course certificate shows completion. HHS does not certify training or people as HIPAA compliant.
Common mistakes
- A once-a-year generic course with no training on the practice's own policies.
- No records of who completed what.
- Treating a completion certificate as proof the organization is compliant.
How we compare
- Certificate of completion
- Learners get a dated certificate they can download or print after passing.
- Role-specific courses
- Separate courses or modules for different roles — for example healthcare workers, business associates or managers.
- Completion tracking for owners
- An administrator can enroll staff and see who completed training — records that help document the training HIPAA requires.
- Continuing education credits
- Completion earns CE or CEU credits.
- Published pricing
- Prices are listed on the vendor's website rather than only quoted after a sales call.
