Signs a BAAYes

Nextiva signs a Business Associate Agreement. Nextiva requires customers using its HIPAA products to sign its Business Associate Agreement; phone service, virtual fax and video conferencing are named among the covered services.

A BAA alone does not make its use HIPAA compliant: set it up as described under What to configure, and cover it in your risk analysis.

What you still have to configure

  1. On HIPAA accounts, visual voicemail and voicemail-to-email or text are switched off, voicemails can't be played in the Nextiva App, and faxes are not attached to emails — incoming faxes are read through a secure link or the portal. source

Limitations

  • Nextiva's published HIPAA feature table does not include SMS, and its guidance also disables sending faxes from email. Confirm the current restrictions for your product before relying on texting or email-to-fax. source
  • Nextiva's page doesn't say which plans include the HIPAA offering or how the BAA is signed — confirm both before you port numbers. source
